So You're Thinking Of Going Vegan

First off, congratulations and welcome!

You’ve at least clicked on the entry and that means you’d like to learn more about a plant-based, vegan, diet and lifestyle. I cringe to think of it now, but I once brought a honey-baked ham to a party. Nowadays, I might bring a Cauliflower roast with potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, and Brussels sprouts or a party pizza topped with seasonal vegetables.

I am not a doctor. I am not a nutritionist. I have consulted with both privately and suggest doing the same. I also suggest diving into some books and documentaries on the subject.

A few reading recommendations on nutrition and leading a plant-based and Vegan life are:

The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, and Long-Term Health By T. Colin Campbell, PhD & Thomas M. Campbell II, MD

Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition By Howard Jacobson and T. Colin Campbell, PhD

Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non Vegan World By Bob Torres & Jenna Torres

There are many documentaries about Veganism, here are a few to start with:

Fast Food Nation

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead

Food, Inc

Forks Over Knives

What The Health

You might be thinking that a plant-based, vegan diet is expensive and filled with hassle. I have found the opposite to be true. Make your first stop for groceries a discount store, such as 99 Cents Only Stores. Many offer a variety of fresh and frozen produce, and non-dairy milks, in addition to various specialty vegan items. Personally, I have found everything from Cashew milk to Papaya, and from condiments to chocolate bars. Whenever possible, I bake and cook from scratch and prepare meals in advance.

Full disclosure: I am in the process of getting a headboard reupholstered in a vegan fabric as it was purchased a few years before I made the switch and was made with leather. Does it keep me up at night? Yes. Some nights it does, but I meditated on the subject, asked forgiveness for my part in the cruel and untimely death of an incredible creature, and expressed gratitude for the joy that it brought.
